The Gillespie High School football team (1-4) lost their third straight game Friday night 0-26 to the opposing Hillsboro Hilltoppers who extended their win streak to 5-0. After opening their season with a one-point loss to Vandalia, Gillespie bounced back with a victory over Litchfield, but has since lost the following three games to Pana, Southwestern-Piasa and Hillsboro.
Gillespie trailed 0-6 at halftime, but fell apart in the third quarter with a pair of fumbles. After the turnovers in the third, Gillespie only trailed by two touchdowns (0-14) heading into the fourth quarter. The turnover plagued Miners opened the fourth quarter by allowing Hillsboro to block a punt, leading to an early 0-20 deficit in the fourth quarter. After a fumble on the Miners’ second drive in the fourth quarter, the Toppers extended their lead even more with another touchdown sealing the loss, 0-26.
