The Gillespie Middle School baseball team’s season came to a close Monday afternoon after the Indians were defeated by the Staunton Terriers 2-3 in the regional championship despite Frankie Barrett holding Staunton to just two hits in five innings.
Monday’s loss marks the third time this season Gillespie was defeated by Staunton. The team lost to them twice in regular season by scores of 0-7 and 2-8, then in the regional championship this week 2-3 after the Terriers pushed across a run in the bottom of the sixth.
Staunton took an early lead in the first inning after scoring two runners and the championship was a stalemate until the top of the sixth inning when Gillespie rallied and tied the game 2-2. The Terriers remain undefeated as they advance to sectionals.
Gillespie finishes the season with a record of 9-6 and a 6-3 record in the 2M Conference. The Indians have a solid group of seventh graders returning next season.
Head coach Jeremy Smith, who also coaches high school baseball, says he is excited to see the eighth graders playing next year as freshman.
