An East Alton man who escaped from the Macoupin County Jail on Sunday, April 12 around 10 p.m. was apprehended nearly 24 hours later Monday evening in Shipman and is back in custody, according to Macoupin County Sheriff Shawn Kahl.
“I received information from a subject in Shipman in reference to a possible sighting of William D. Kavanaugh,” Sheriff Kahl wrote Monday around 10:20 p.m., “I contacted several Macoupin County units to respond. At that time, we surrounded a trailer in the 200 block of Law Street in Shipman and Kavanaugh came out peacefully and was taken into custody without incident.”
Officials believe Kavanaugh, 35, received help escaping from another inmate. He escaped from the county jail after obtaining access to a closet, crawling through the ceiling, and jumping out a second-story window.
“I would like to thank all the law enforcement agencies that helped out today,” Sheriff Kahl added.
